Fresh pomelos from Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, are exported to Malaysia for the first time.

In early October 2025, a batch of fresh pomelos produced in the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province passed inspection and quarantine at Xishuangbanna Customs and were exported to Malaysia for the first time.

The main cultivated varieties in Yunnan Province are Crystal Honey Pomelo, Guanxi Honey Pomelo, and Red Jade Pomelo, planted mainly in the warm river valleys of western and southern Yunnan, including Dehong, Xishuangbanna, Honghe, and Baoshan prefectures and cities, with the harvest season from late September to November. Due to the large temperature difference between day and night and ample sunlight, the sugar-acid ratio is better than that of the same varieties in inland areas. With advantages of early maturity, high quality, and border trade, they hold distinctive competitiveness in regional markets.

According to data released by Kunming Customs, in 2024, Yunnan Province’s agricultural product export value reached 19.17 billion yuan, an increase of 13.7% year-on-year. Among them, Yunnan exported a total of 656,000 tons of fruits (including nuts) in 2024, valued at 5.27 billion yuan, with year-on-year growth of 16.7% and 8.9%, respectively. The main export markets include the 10 ASEAN countries and other regions, forming a fruit “cross-border corridor” of “warm-out, heat-back.”

In recent years, Yunnan fruits and vegetables have been continuously popular in the ASEAN market, with special agricultural products such as citrus, grapes, and mushrooms becoming “star” items in cross-border trade. Among them, Yunnan blueberries have a large export volume; in 2024, export volume increased 25 times year-on-year, accounting for more than 50% of China’s total export volume in the same period, ranking first in the country, and were exported to ASEAN countries including Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.

Over the past three years, the China-Laos Railway International Freight Train has begun operations, providing great convenience for trade between China and ASEAN countries. By the end of 2024, Kunming Customs supervised more than 10.6 million tons of import and export goods via the China-Laos Railway, with a cargo value exceeding 44 billion yuan. The highest monthly import and export freight volume exceeded 510,000 tons, 12.6 times higher than that of the first month of operation.
